Andrew C. Garvy was born October 13,1907 in Chicago Illinois. He was the 2nd oldest son in a family of five boys and five girls. His mother died when he was fourteen years old and he and his nine siblings were raised by their Father who was a doctor. Cos(his nickname) followed in his father’s footsteps and became a doctor graduating from Loyola University Medical School in 1933. He began practicing medicine in Chicago and married Bernice Kinsella on May 2, 1936. He entered the Army Medical Corps in November of 1942, spending the next four plus years in the 9th Field artillery, 3rd Division in Central Europe.

Upon cessation of hostilities, when others were being released to civilian life, Capt. Garvy was required to remain on active duty to participate in a high profile government project.

Discharged Honorably from the Army in January, 1946, Dr. Garvy moved his family to Iowa City and started his Medical practice. He practiced medicine in Iowa City until 1969 when he closed his practice. During the next three years he was a doctor at the Veterans Hospital In Iowa City.

Medals earned: He was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and EAME campaign medal.
