Andrew Jackson Kimes was born on September 18th, 1842 in Mercy County Ohio to Uriah and Nancy Cross Kimes. They moved to Iowa in 1847 and then to Indiana by 1860. Andy served in the Army as a Private from 1863-1864. Andy joined Company G 118th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in August of 1863 for a six month enlistment. The 118th was part of the Army of the Ohio that took part in several actions at the confluence of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. He mustered out in March of 1864.

Andy moved to Pleasant Valley Township, Johnson County Iowa in 1868, married Mary Etta Newton in 1869 and had four children that lived to adulthood; Frank , Ida Jane (Lewis), Emma (Wildman) and Alta (Abbey).

Living the last forty years of his life at Pleasant Valley Township Andy passed away February 8th, 1928 and was buried with a military headstone at the Sandtown Cemetery one mile east of Hills, Iowa.
