Bill Helms served honorably in the United States Navy from July of 1956 thru June of 1960 as a Maintenance Engineer. He spent most of his enlistment aboard the USS Monticello (LSD-35.) During his time in the Navy, he traveled to New Jersey, Norfolk, Panama Canal, Japan, Enewetak Atoll, and Alaska. He received his training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station before getting stationed in San Diego for three years. During that time, he married Lois Boseneiler in Old Town San Diego whom he remained married to for 58 years. Bill and Lois purchased a farm together where they began to build what would become a beloved gathering place to all who visited. Bill worked tirelessly to turn the already beautiful land into an area where family & friends could comfortably enjoy nature and each other’s company. Upon completion of Bills Active Duty commitment where he earned a Good Conduct medal, he transferred to the Naval Reserves. In addition to farming, he worked as a Millwright for 37 & ½ years for Northwestern Steel and Wire.

Bill's love for the farm and nature itself will live on in the large family that he and Lois created together. They had six children, 17 grandchildren, and at the time of this writing, 17 great-grandchildren.

Bill taught his family to be the best they could, to work hard, and enjoy the outdoor life as much as possible.
