David K. Trine
Co I 22nd IA Vols
Vicksburg Assault
At the age of 21, David mustered into Company “I" 22nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment in August of 1862. He was at the tip of the assault at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863 as a Private. Conquering a ten foot wide ditch and scaling a 15 foot high wall in a constant storm of grapeshot and musketry, David was among the 16-20 men who made it into the Fort; raised the flag, captured 13 rebel prisoners and fought their way out. Only a handful survived. David has three marks where bullets had ploughed through his hat. One groove on the top of his head, and two on each side one over the ear. These three marks were visible until the day he died. David continued the war rising to the rank to Lieutenant by wars end.
He participated in many more actions including Cedar Creek and the Third Battle of Winchester, Virginia where his brother in law Israel Ritter was killed.
After the Army, David and his wife lived at Morfordsville on the Sand Road until his death May 28, 1871. David rests in the Sandtown Cemetery east of Hills, Iowa with a private headstone.
