David was born to John & Berthia Willtrout on March 16th 1844 in New Jersey. Moving to Illinois then later moved to Iowa. David joined the 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment in December of 1863 at age 18 for a three year enlistment. He served at; Brownsville, Texas, New Orleans, Pensacola, Florida, action at Milton Florida, Fort Gaines Dauphin Island, Alabama, Mobile Bay Campaign, actions at siege of the Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, then back to New Orleans and a transfer to Co. C 29th Iowa Infantry to muster out on August 1865.

Back in Iowa, David married Mary Graves in the early 1870’s. They had five children that lived to adulthood; Nellie (Murphy, Walker), Albert, Clara Edith (Moberly), Clarence and Eva (Sweet, Enfield). In his later years, David and son Clarence bought fish in Muscatine and rode around three counties selling them to farm wives from a horse drawn wagon. As David aged his health deteriorated and he passed August 19, 1910.

His Burial was in Swank cemetery including a military headstone.
