Denny graduated from City High School in June 1965. Since he knew he would soon be drafted, he joined the Army in November 1965 where he was sent to basic training at Ft. Carson, CO followed by 16 weeks of basic mechanic training. In June 1966 he was shipped to Vietnam and assigned to a maintenance depot in Cam Rahn Bay for three months before moving to Tuy Hoa. The whole company performed heavy maintenance on trucks, jeeps and self-propelled artillery pieces, and he spent one night in the jungle repairing an engine on a self-propelled artillery piece.

In July of 1967 he returned to the United States and finished up his enlistment at Fort Sill, OK with the Test and Evaluation Command. While at Fort Sill he worked on the Pershing A1 Missile Carrier, convoyed to Blanding, UT to watch three A1’s fired down to White Sands, NM, and also drove a tank retriever when testing artillery pieces.

Denny separated from the service in November 1968.
