Edward W. Windrem was born 16 October, 1906, son of William E. and Ann Hevern Windrem. He went to high school at Iowa City High School. Edward was married to Areline Summers 4 September, 1954 in Dewitt, IA.
Windrem enlisted in 1925 into the Iowa National Guard, 40 years later he retired. During his time in the Iowa National Guard, he was Sergeant Major in the 109th Medical Battalion Headquarters. Approximately half of his 40 years were spent on full time duty in Iowa City.
In 1941, Windrem was the First Sergeant of the Cavalry Troop when the unit was called to active service for WWII. His unit was then converted into a mechanized armor division before being sent into combat. Windrem was wounded at the Battle of St. Lo. For his service, he received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. The citation for the Bronze Star stated that the award was being made for loyalty, fairness and devotion to his group which Sergeant Windrem displayed throughout the campaign, winning him the respect and admiration of his entire troop.
