Gerald R. Monk was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on January 26, 1942, son of Harold J. and Evelyn J. Monk. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1960, and received his B.A. (Political Science) from the University of Iowa and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. from the University of Iowa AFROTC in June 1964. He married Eloise Moore of Grundy Center in 1964.
He entered active duty with the Air Force in 1965 and was stationed at Eglin AFB as Air Police Officer until 1967 when he was reassigned to Vietnam. There he served as a Security Forces officer at Da Nang and Phang Rang Air Bases. During that time, he worked extensively with the Vietnamese Army, the Korean 33rd White Horse Division, and the Australian Royal Air Force as well as the U.S. military in the defense of air bases in Vietnam. He returned to Dover AFB as Security and Law Enforcement Officer in 1968 and left active duty in 1969. Captain Monk holds the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. He is an honorary member of the 33rd (White Horse) Division ROK and also holds the Republic of Korea Vietnam Service Medal.
After military service he spent one year as a Group Representative for the Prudential Insurance Co. in Des Moines, Iowa. He then returned to the University of Iowa Law School where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1972. Upon becoming a lawyer, he practiced law for one year in Sheffield, Iowa, and then moved his practice to Grundy Center, Iowa, where he practiced law for approximately forty years before retirement.
Gerald and Eloise also created, owned and operated two real estate title companies. During his career as a lawyer, he also held positions as Judicial Hospitalization Referee and Judicial Magistrate for Grundy County, Iowa. He and Eloise have two sons, Gerald Andrew Monk and Jesse Allen Monk.
