Corporal Gordon Zumwalt’s service in the European theater during WWII was the defining experience of his life. As a member of the historic 26th Infantry “Yankee” Division, assigned to Company G, 104th Regiment; Gordon participated in the Normandy Division, landing with fellow troops at Utah Beach. He went on to engage in the Battle of the Bulge and welcomed the news of the end of the war while recovering in a hospital in Bar le Duc, France. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in the Battle of the Bulge. Gordon was an active member of American Legion Posts 460 in Solon, Iowa and Post 17 Iowa City, Iowa. An active volunteer at the VA Hospital, he volunteered over 3000 hours. His life exemplified the satisfaction derived from hard work, the necessity of loyalty to family and country and the fulfillment that results when life’s challenged are met with vigor, determination, optimism, and hope.

Gordon was born June 17, 1925 and passed away March 24, 2020. He entered Active Duty October 14, 1943 and discharged Honorably March 11, 1946. In addition to the Bronze Star, Gordon earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Marksmanship Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
