Herman Alfred Ruppert was born in Iowa City, Iowa on September 27, 1893. He graduated from Irish Business College in April of 1918 and enlisted in the Army. He was sent to New York and then on to Camp Jackson in South Carolina where he was trained as a mechanic. Days before he was to be deployed overseas, World War I ended. He returned to Iowa City where he farmed and later worked at the Iowa City Creamery as a butter maker. He married Clarissa Pelzer in 1921 at St. Mary’s Rectory and in 1925 his daughter Clarissa Terese was born. Herman lived in Iowa City until his death on October 25, 1980.
