John Dane was born January 24, 1926 in University Hospital when it was east of the Iowa river in Iowa City, Iowa.  He was raised on a farm near Iowa City, but attended Iowa City elementary schools.  He entered Shattuck School in Faribault, MN in 1939 which had ROTC training along with High School.  He graduated in 1943 and entered the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program at Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa.  On March 15, 1944 he was inducted into the Army Air Corps, and sent to Sheppard Field at Wichita Falls, TX, for Basic Training.  On May 1, 1944 he was sent to the University of Cincinnati for Air Corps College.  On July 1, 1944 he was sent to Perrin Field, Sherman, TX, to wait to go to Pre-Flight in preparation for Flight Training.  At Perrin Field he worked as a Mechanic in the Hangar, and pre-flighted BT-13, and AT-6 Aircraft.  He was discharged on October 28, 1945.

In 1946 he enrolled in Agriculture at Iowa State, and began active farming in 1947.  John Dane married Allegra Gardner on June 18, 1949, and they raised 2 boys and 3 girls while managing a Dairy Farm, and operating Dane's Dairy, a dairy store.  John was active in Community Affairs, and served 6 years on the Iowa City Community School Board.  Allegra died November 19, 2012, and John moved to Oaknoll Retirement Home in 2013.  In 2014 he married Kathryn Schweer.
