Leo Vincent Hein was born in Iowa City and lived there all his 28 years. He married Zelma Potter in October, 1938 and they had one daughter, Joan in September 1939.

He was employed at City Bakery in Iowa City when he enlisted in the Army April 25, 1944. He wanted to help keep the battles on foreign soil. His Basic Training was at Camp Roberts in California. After arriving in Europe, he took part in two battles before he lost his life in Germany on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge December 16, 1944.

His choice if he didn’t return was to remain with his comrades who also lost their lives. Therefore, he is buried in Lorraine American Military Cemetery near St. Avold in France.
