Lyman Bartlett was born January 27, 1826 in Strongsville, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. After marrying, he moved to Johnson County, Iowa east of Solon, Iowa.

In 1862 he enlisted in Co. D, 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and served in the "Shenandoah Valley Sharp Shooters" Temperance Regiment under General Phil Sheridan.

He fought in battles at Champion Hill, Vicksburg and Shenandoah Valley and was captured October 19, 1864 at the battle of Cedar Creek. After his capture, he was sent to the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Prisoners were given very little food and Lyman lost 75 pounds in the five months before his release near the end of the war. After his release, Lyman and a friend he had met in prison who was from Lisbon, Iowa were forced to return home on foot as there was no transportation provided for them. He made his way back to his wife and four children and lived on his farm near Solon until his death August 29, 1899.
