Max Stewart Hawkins was born in Mississippi in 1914. After graduating from high school, he entered the Navy where he served on the U.S.S. New York and destroyer called the Jacob Jones. Hawkins also starred on the Navy all-fleet football team. After his initial four years in the Navy, he was recruited to play football at the State University of Iowa (SUI) in 1937 where he had the privilege of playing on Iowa’s famed 1939 Ironmen team. After graduation from the SUI in 1941 he returned to the Navy for World War II service and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon completion of his naval service, he returned to Iowa City where he and his wife, Delores Helmer Hawkins, raised their family and he worked for the University of Iowa representing and promoting the University’s interests at the Legislature and throughout Iowa.
