I grew up in Coralville and graduated from West High in 1970. I then attended the University of Iowa for two years.
I beat the draft and enlisted in August 1972. where I served aboard the USS Benjamin Stoddert DDG-22 stationed at Pearl Harbor, HI. Returning from WESTPAC deployment we showed the flag entering Pearl Harbor on 7 December, 1973. Manning the rail made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Very emotional experience!
