Paul Leonard ‘Nick’ Carter, Gunner’s Mate Second Class, Navy, Feb-14 1942 to Oct-2 1945. He was part of the LCI-1 Class Landing Craft Infantry (Large), serving on the USS LCI(L)-15. The flat-bottom hull was designed for beaching and brought invasion troops right up to the fighting. This ship also laid smoke to hide larger ships from attacks and provided close-in fire support. The LCI(L)-15 was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater as a unit of LCI Flotilla 2 and participated in the North African occupation, Sicilian occupation, Salerno landings, West coast of Italy operations and the Invasion of Normandy.
Nick coordinated flotilla reunion events for more than 50 years in locations all over the country and one European trip.
Honors Earned: Navy and Marine Corps medal.
