Philip Brandstatter came to the U.S. in 1840, as a stowaway from Germany. He was born in 1824 in Germany/Austria. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1846, and joined Company D, 1st Illinois Cavalry. He served in West Texas and environs until 1848, during the Mexican-American War.

He married Mary Evans, in Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1849. Philip came to Johnson County in 1850. He was a farmer and their farm was located 2 miles south of Tiffin. It is reported that they witnessed the Mormons traveling west from Coralville in the 1855-1857 handcart movement. Philip and Mary had 12 children. Both Philip and Mary died in 1891, and they are buried in the Oakhill Cemetery, in Tiffin, Iowa. Philip donated his stomach to the University of Iowa, hoping he could help others via their medical research. Philip Brandstatter is the great-great Grandfather of Rex and Rox Brandstatter.
