Richard Knebel was born in Riverside, IA to Zeno and Irene Knebel on 13 May 1931. He attended High School at St. Mary’s in Riverside. Richard worked at Montgomery Wards until he joined the service in November 1951 as a part of the United States Marine Corps.

He was the first Marine drafted from Washington County, Iowa and also the first to return home in 1953. He achieved the rank of Corporal.

After his service, Richard went to St Ambrose College using the GI Bill. Upon completion of his degree he started working as a nurse in surgery for the Iowa City V.A. Hospital and stayed there for 34 years until he retired in 1986. Richard was married in 1957 and has two adopted children, one living here in Iowa City and one down south in Phoenix, AZ.
