Robert Houseal was born January 16, 1923, to Isador Phillip Houseal and Anna Bennetta Quinn. He enlisted at age 18 and entered WWII shortly thereafter as a Radioman First Class. During his Coast Guard service from 1942-1945, he earned the American Area Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal (with two bronze stars).
After the service, he married Kathryne Maxine Cupp and settled in Wellman, Iowa, where he raised Shetland ponies, miniature horses, and nine children. He was also the owner and operator of Houseal Radio-TV and Houseal Realty.
