Robert Leo Jenn joined the Navy and went to basic training on 28 June 1966 in San Diego, California. Upon completion he was stationed at the Coronado Amphibious Construction Battalion Base also in California. While there, Jenn served on a landing craft utility boat along with barges that held maneuvers in the Pacific pretty regularly with other ships from Coronado and the San Diego area. These maneuvers consisted of towing pontoons out to sea and also extended to offloading ship equipment and supplies as simulations for the real campaigns in Vietnam.

On 22 February 1969 Jenn deployed to Vietnam and served exactly one full year. While in country, Jenn served on the PBR Mobil Base II (River Patrol Boat). For his first three months, he stayed only three miles from the Cambodia border on the Mekong Delta River. The base then moved down to the Saigon River next to the town of Tan Am, 14 miles Southwest of Saigon. During this time, his main duties were river patrolling and shuttling Vietnamese soldiers to battle zones while working with a contingence of the Vietnamese Army.

His worst experience was escorting one of his mates body back to Little Rock, Arkansas.
