Major General Robert L. Sentman began his military career on January 8, 1958, when he enlisted in the United States Army. After attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, he commissioned through the Officer Candidate School as a Second Lieutenant on July 7, 1962. During his career he has commanded three Engineer Companies, an Engineer Battalion, an Artillery Battalion, a Support Group, and an Infantry Brigade. In March of 1986 he was promoted to Brigadier General and served as Director of Mobilization and Planning for the Iowa National Guard.
Major General Sentman has earned numerous state and federal awards and distinctions to include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster. Major General Sentman retired August 5, 1992 after 34½ years of service.
