Jim was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and moved to Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 10 where he lived on Koser Avenue in University Heights. He graduated from Iowa City High in 1962. He enlisted Airborne Infantry in 1963. He served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in An Khê South Vietnam in 1968 as a Parachute Rigger.
He came back to the University of Iowa and worked at Moors Business Forms. He enlisted in the 1st Battalion, 410th Infantry Army Reserve rising to Scout Platoon Sergeant. He returned to Active Duty as a Field Recruiter in Iowa City. He became an In-Service Recruiter at Ft. Riley, KS upon promotion to Master Sergeant. After graduation from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, he was promoted and assigned to U.S. Army Recruiting Command, Ft. Sheridan, IL as Senior Operations Sergeant Major. He retired in 1991 becoming a PGA Golf Professional at Finkbine Golf Course. He is now a PGA Teacher and Director of instruction for the Golf for Injured Veterans (GIVE) foundation teaching golf to injured and disabled Veterans.
