Sherwood Harold Wolfson was drafted in 1946 at the end of his freshman year at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. He served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan from November 1946 through June 1947.
He joined the United States Army Reserves in 1949, retiring in1987 at the rank of Colonel. He was called to active duty twice while in the USAR. During the Korean Conflict he was stationed in Germany from November 1951 through June 1952, and he was stationed at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, from October 1961 to August 1962 during the Berlin Crisis. He retired as Full Colonel and Commander of the 481st Maxillofacial Surgical unit, U.S. Army Reserve in Cedar Rapids, IA.
Sherwood Wolfson continued with his education while in the USAR, He received his B.S. degree in 1953 from Westminster College and the D.D.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. He received his Oral Surgery Certificate in 1970 from the University of Texas after completing his residency in Houston, Texas.
Sherwood Wolfson began his dental career as a staff dentist at the VA Medical Center in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1958-1966. He served as Supervisor of Regional Dental Programs for the VA in Washington, DC for one year in 1967. He joined the VA Medical Center in Iowa City in 1971 as Chief of the Dental Service retiring from that position in 1996. He served as Acting Chief of Staff for the VA Medical Center in Iowa City for one year, 1996-97. He was appointed to the faculty in Oral Surgery in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa in 1971, retiring in 1997 at the rank of Associate Professor.
He married Sara Crawford in Wilmington, Delaware on November 25, 1967. He died on May 23, 2016, at the Oaknoll Retirement Community.
