In 1966 I graduated from Alburnett High School in Alburnett, IA and joined the United States Air Force. After Basic Training, I was sent to Kingsley Field, Klamath Falls, Oregon, to learn the job of aircraft welder. In 1968 I received orders for Clark Air Base, Angles City, Philippines.

After sixteen months, my tour was over and I was given the choice of extending four months in the Philippines or extending my enlistment two months & going somewhere in the United States or separating from the Air Force and returning home to join the Iowa National Guard.

In 1972 I entered York College, York, Nebraska. I graduated in 1975 with an AA Degree. While in college I joined the Nebraska National Guard which helped pay for college expenses.

After graduation I moved back to Iowa and rejoined the Iowa National Guard as a cook with the 209th Medical Company clearing in Iowa City.

In 1984 I cross-trained into the medical field and went to Desert Storm as a Ward Chief.

I retired in 1991 after 21 years of service.
