Terry joined the Air Force in August of 1965. After basic training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas, he was transferred to Technical training at Sheppard AFB to be trained on jet engine aircraft maintenance. Terry graduated top of his class at Sheppard and was assigned to an F-106 Interceptor Squadron at Duluth AFB, Minnesota. He was then assigned to their detachment site at Volk Field, Wisconsin where they had F-106 Interceptors on 15-minute alert to protect our country from surprise attacks by Russian bombers.

Terry was then sent to McConnell AFB in Kansas to be trained to work on the F-105 Fighter/Bomber. He was then assigned to the 357 TFS at Takhli, Thailand. The 105s flew from there to Hanoi, North Vietnam, on bombing missions. Terry came back from Thailand to George AFB at Victorville, California. While at George AFB, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sgt. Terry was discharged from the Air Force in January of 1968 because of an early out program.

After discharging honorably, he returned home to the family farm where he was born and raised.
