Terry enlisted voluntarily in to the United States Navy on November 30, 1966, and discharged honorably August 13, 1970. He served in Washington State, Atsugi, Japan and Long Beach, California aboard the USS Ticonderoga.
On June 24, 1976 Terry enlisted in the Iowa National Guard and served for 25 years before retiring honorably as a Staff Sergeant E-6. During this time, he was called into active duty in the Army during Desert Storm serving in the Middle East with the Iowa City 209th Medical Company.
Medals earned: National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal—Saudi Arabia and various ribbons
