Virgil L Miller was a native of Iowa City, Iowa. He graduated from City High with the class of 1968. He entered the United States Army after graduating and served with the 300th Military Police Unit in Germany and Vietnam. In Vietnam he was a Squad Leader and acting Platoon Sergeant for the drug withholding center in Long Bien, Vietnam . He was also a machine gunner on a M1117 armored security vehicle while escorting convoys and securing the roads, where they encountered many attacks by the Vietcong.
Upon returning to the United States he began his life long career in law enforcement. Virgil became Chief of Police of West branch, Iowa, he then joined the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. He also was a Safety and Security officer for University of Iowa hospitals and clinics and a Security Officer at Iowa Medical and Classification Center.
In 1995 Virgil became disabled due to multiple health issues stemming from serving his country in Vietnam. On December 25, 2015 Virgil passed away with his family by his side, from complications from surgery performed at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
