William went to boot camp in Farragut, Idaho. From there he went to radio school on Yerba Island, near San Francisco, CA. William was shipped out to Pearl Harbor, arriving on June 6, 1944 (the photo above was taken on this day after landing at Pearl Harbor). William was then transferred to Johnston Island, a strategic air base between Okinawa, Japan and Pearl Harbor until the end of the war. William was married to Jackie (Brown) Butcher for 65 years. They raised two children, Pattie (Butcher) Flesh and Mark Butcher. William worked at John Deere for 40 years. William also taught history, coached basketball, and served on the Grand Jury of Ventura County, CA. William was a Christian man, serving in various ways at the Presbyterian Church, Davenport, IA. He passed away on 11/07/2018.

Medals earned: American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, and World War II Victory Ribbon
