Following graduation with a B.A. degree from Drake University, Dr. Johnson received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1975. Following graduation he served in the United States Army as a General Dental Officer in Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Dr. Johnson received his Certificate of Specialization in Endodontics and Master of Science Degree from the University of Iowa in 1981.

As a dental specialist, Dr. Johnson has made a career of teaching and research in dental education. He has served as Department Chair at two research intense universities and has been President of both the American Association of Endodontists (7,800 members world-wide) and the American Board of Endodontics.

His initial faculty appointment was at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry where he served for eight years and was as Chair of the Department of Endodontics from 1988 to 1991 when he returned to the University of Iowa to Direct the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics. In 2003 he was appointed Departmental Executive Officer for the Department of Endodontics at Iowa and he is currently the Departmental Executive Officer (Chair). In 2006 Dr. Johnson was awarded the Richard E. Walton Endodontic Professorship by the University of Iowa Provost. This is only the seventh endowed professorship in the 125 year history of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. From 2000 to 2004 he represented the College of Dentistry on the University of Iowa Faculty Senate. For over 20 years he maintained an appointment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and served as a consultant to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.

Dr. Johnson served as Secretary, Program Chair, Chair of the Endodontic Section of the American Dental Education Association (American Association of Dental Schools) from 1989-1992 and was Councilor for the section from 2000-2003. He is also served his four years (2003-2007) on the ADEA Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs representing the American Association of Endodontists.

Dr. Johnson was a member of the Educational Affairs Committee of the American Association of Endodontists from 1990-1993 serving as Chair in 1993. He was a member of the first formal Annual Session Planning Committee in 1993-1994 and has served on the Association's Ad Hoc Committee to Address Endodontic Nomenclature (Glossary of Endodontic Terms) in 1994 and 2003. In the late 1990’s he served on the Association’s Task Force to Revise the Standards of Advanced Education Programs in Endodontics (in the United States and Canada).

Dr. Johnson was one of twelve Directors of the American Association of Endodontists representing District V (17 Mid-western and Western states) from 2000-2003. In this capacity he has served as Board Liaison to the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee (2002), the Educational Affairs Committee (2001 and 2003) and the Committee to Address Endodontic Nomenclature (2002 and 2003). In addition Dr. Johnson served as Vice-Chair for the Annual Session Committee in 2003, was Program Chair in 2004, and was General Chair for the 2005 Annual Session in Dallas. In 2007 Dr. Johnson served as Chair of the Continuing Education Committee and was a member of the Educational Affairs Committee, the Annual Session Planning Committee, and the Special Committee on Quality Education. In April of 2009 Dr. Johnson was elected to serve as Vice-President of the American Association of Endodontists, President-Elect in 2011, President in 2012 and served as Immediate Past President of the AAE in 2013. Dr. Johnson served as a Trustee for the American Association of Endodontics from 2009 to 2013.

Dr. Johnson served the American Dental Association as a Consultant to the Council of Dental Materials, Instruments, and Equipment from 1991-1994. He was an Endodontic Consultant (site visitor) to the Commission on Dental Accreditation from for six years (1994 - 2000), and has been a Consultant to the Council on Scientific Affairs. He served a three year term on the Endodontic Review Committee of the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (2003-2007). He was recently appointed to a second four year term on the Endodontic Review Committee of the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (2012-2016)

After serving as a Dental Officer in the United States Army at Fort Sill from 1975 to 1977, Dr. Johnson was an active member of the 294th Medical Detachment of the Iowa Army National Guard from 1977 to 1995. In 1993 Dr. Johnson was awarded the "A" Proficiency Designator, the highest award for professional achievement given by the Office of the Surgeon General, United States Army. He has received the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, an Overseas Service Medal, a National Defense Medal, an Army Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, a State Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. In 1995 Dr. Johnson retired from the Iowa Army National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General.
