The Johnson County Auditor’s Office is again partnering with the University of Iowa to offer students a hands-on learning experience in election administration this fall.

Through the Election Administration course taught by Professor Alex Smith, students will get an inside look at how elections are conducted, explore the laws and processes that govern elections, and serve as Johnson County Precinct Election Officials (poll workers) during the 2026 General Election. 

Students visited the Johnson County Auditor’s Office on Thursday, Aug. 27, for an introduction to election administration, a tour of the office and its facilities, and onboarding as poll workers.

“Elections are an essential part of our democracy, and there is no better way for students to understand that process than experiencing it firsthand,” said County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Julie Persons. “We are excited to work with Professor Smith again to allow students to learn about the work that goes into conducting a successful election in Johnson County.”

Nearly 40 students are enrolled in the course and are expected to work at Johnson County polling locations during the November 3, 2026 General Election.
