County Attorney

Statement from Johnson County Attorney, Rachel Zimmermann Smith

April 19, 2026 (JOHNSON COUNTY, IA) – I woke up early this morning with a text from one of my kids, a University of Iowa student, telling me that she was near this morning’s shooting but that she was safe. You or someone you know may have also been downtown last night and experienced trauma. This tragedy requires us to come together as a community and support each other.

I want to reassure you that the Johnson County Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement are committed to finding the perpetrators and bringing them to justice. We will also work to reinforce safety measures downtown and collaborate with elected officials to ensure that our officers have the resources they need to protect the community.

As a mom and a Hawkeye, I want you to know I share your grief. As your county attorney, I want you to know that law enforcement will work around the clock to solve this case. In the meantime, my office is here to support the victims of this violent crime and their families.
