Johnson County Jail Death Investigation 

March 11, 2026 (JOHNSON COUNTY, IA) On March 11, 2026, at 4:05 a.m. during a routine head count in the Johnson County Jail, jail staff found an inmate unresponsive in their cell.  Jail staff immediately attempted lifesaving measures and requested an ambulance, however the individual was later pronounced deceased.    The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and an autopsy is underway at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  Pursuant to Iowa law the State Jail Inspector has been notified as well.
