Dates and deadlines:

  • August 12-29: Candidate filing period, Iowa City/University Heights only.
    • Iowa City, At Large: 120 signatures, based on 2011 election. Four year terms, two seats.
    • Iowa City District B: 87 signatures, based on 2009 election. Four year term.
    • University Heights: 10 signatures, 2 year terms. Mayor, all five council seats.
  • August 26-September 19: Filing period for all other cities.
    • Coralville, North Liberty: 25 signatures. All others: 10 signatures.
  • Monday, September 2: Labor Day holiday, office closed.
  • Wednesday, October 2: Early voting begins at Auditor's Office
  • Friday, October 25:  Voter pre-registration deadline, 5 p.m. 11 days before the election.  Voters can still register after this deadline using the election day registration procedure. 
  • Friday, November 1: 5 p.m. deadline to request absentee ballot by mail.
  • Monday, November 4: Postmark deadline for absentee ballots to be counted.
  • Tuesday, November 5: Election Day. Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM in most cities.
