On Tuesday, November 5, the Johnson County Auditor's Office will report turnout statistics throughout the day. following the close of the polls at 8 p.m., we will post election returns.

Since this is the first election of this type, many details of the election returns process have changed.

Turnout Updates
Precincts will report turnout at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. Turnout by precinct (Registration totals final, through November 2)
Precincts
With the change in state law combining city and school elections, there are no longer separate school precincts. Most voters will vote at their regular general election precincts. A few precincts will be combined:
- Big Grove and Cedar
- Coralville 1 and 4
- Iowa City 6 and 16
- Hills and Liberty-Pleasant Valley
- Graham and Newport
- North Liberty 1 and 5
Separate results will not be available for these combined precincts.
Number of Precincts Reporting
Our office will report results from 52 precincts. 51 of these will be election day precincts (the 57 regular precincts, minus the six combined precincts listed about). The 52nd precinct is absentee voting, which will be counted separately. There are no county-wide contests in this election.
Number of precincts by city (all include absentee as one precinct):
- Iowa City: 24. All voters in the city may vote in the at large race and in both direct races
- Coralville: 7
- North Liberty: 6
- All other cities: 2
Number of precincts by school district: (all include absentee as one precinct)
- Iowa City: 45
- Clear Creek Amana: 10
- Solon: 5
- Lone Tree, College Community, Mid-Prairie, West Branch, Williamsburg: 4
- West Liberty: 3
- Highland, Lisbon, Mt. Vernon: 2
In all school districts with director, districts, all voters in the whole school district may vote on all contest.
Number of precincts by community college director district: (all include absentee as one precinct)
- Kirkwood District 2: 7
- Kirkwood District 4: 14
- Kirkwood District 5: 20
- Kirkwood District 8: 2
- Eastern Iowa District 9: 3
Voters only vote for one community college director, for the district where they live. Since directors are elected by district to four year staggered terms, some precincts will not have this contest on their ballots.
Because director district lines do not follow regular precinct lines, some precincts will report results for more than one community college director district.
Possibility of Zero Results
It is likely that there will be precincts within a school district, or even entire school districts, listed as reporting and showing zero for results.
School districts do not follow the same boundaries as counties, cities, townships and precincts. Most rural precincts, and some city precincts, are in more than one school district.
All results from an election day precinct will be reported at once. For example, we will get the Union Township/Iowa City School District results and the Union Township/Clear Creek Amana results at the same time. Once the results are received, that precinct is listed as "reporting" for each city and school district within the precinct.
Some precincts include only very small parts of a given school district, and some school districts include only a very small part of Johnson County. Two school district-precinct combinations currently have zero registered voters, and another five have less than ten registered voters. There are only four Mt. Vernon school district voters in all of Johnson County. If non of these people vote, the precinct will be listed as reporting and the total will be zero.

When will results be available?
We plan to post early voting results promptly at 8 p.m. After 8 p.m. we will update returns as quickly as they are delivered from the 51 polling places. (No, we're not saying an exact time.) Results will be reported by modem. Note that voters in line at 8 p.m. are allowed to vote, and results cannot be send until the last voter is finished.
Our office will only have results from Johnson County. The Iowa City school district, and all cities except West Branch, are entirely with Johnson County. All other school districts include voters in other counties. For additional results, contact other counties or the Secretary of State.
E-mailed Results
We will email results to our regular list of news media contacts and to the addresses provided by candidates when filing. Please contact our office with any changes; additions or corrections to addresses. Format and layout will be the same as the returns page on the website. if your news organization requires a hard copy fax, please contact out office.
Write-In Results
The only contest with more offices available than candidates on the ballot is for a full term on the Williamsburg school board. Two seats are open but only once candidate filed, so at least one winner will be determined by write-ins.
Scattered write-in voters not determining the outcome of a contest will be reviewed in the days following the election. In the event a write-in candidate earns more than 5 percent of the vote, that person will be include in the final canvass of votes and listed on the website.
When are the results final?
Once the poll workers have returned their supplies to out office, our staff will review the printouts from the voting machines and make any corrections. Once all corrections are made, results will include the heading "Final Election Night Results" These will be the last returns posted on November 5.
Vote totals may change in the days following the election if provisional ballots and late arriving absentee ballots with timely postmarks are counted.
All election results are unofficial until the canvass of votes. With the new election process, most school districts will require two canvasses.
The first canvass will be conducted by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 12, and will certify all votes cast in Johnson County. This will make results final for cities and school district located entirely in Johnson County (the Iowa City school district and all cities except West Branch). Other counties will certify their own votes on November 12 and report results as needed to neighboring counties.
The second canvass will be on Tuesday, November 19. The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will certify the Iowa County results for Clear Creek Amana, the Linn Tree school district, and at that point those results will be final. Neighboring counties will certify the Johnson County results for eight school districts and for the Johnson County part of the city of West Branch.
Following the canvass, results will include the heading "Official Canvassed Results." These results will remain on our permanently as a historic record.
