Dates and deadlines
- August 14 - 31: Filing period, Iowa City and University Heights. Earlier date due to possibility of a primary; no primary; no primary was needed in 2017
- Iowa City At Large: 131 signatures (based on 2015 election) from anywhere in the city
- Iowa City District B: 178 signature (based on 2013 election). Signatures must be from District B
- Iowa City Precinct Map with Council Districts

- University Heights: 10 signatures
- August 28 - September 21: Filing period, all other cities
- Coralville, North Liberty: 25 signatures
- All other cities: 10 signatures
- October 18: Beginning of early voting; Early Voting Schedule
- October 27: Voter pre-registration deadline, 5 PM. Voters could still register after this date using the election day registration procedure which requires ID and proof of address
- November 3: Last day to request mailed ballot, 5 PM. (Note: Earlier deadline under new law not in effect until January 1, 2018).
- November 6: Last day for in person early voting at auditor's office, 7:45 to 5:30
- November 7: Election Day. Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM. Vote at regular polling places
