August 29: First day to request a mailed absentee ballot.
September 4: Labor Day, office closed.October 9: 5 PM: Deadline to file citizen petitions requesting a satellite absentee voting station. Petitions require 100 signatures of eligible electors. Contact our office for more information about this new process. Our office does not observe the federal Columbus Day holiday and will be open.
October 10: City Primary required for Iowa CIty District A only.
October 18: First day for in-person early voting, and first day mailed absentee ballots can be sent.October 23: Voter pre-registration deadline. If you need to register in Johnson County or update your address after this date, you will need to follow Election Day Registration procedures in order to vote in this election.
This is also the deadline to request a mailed absentee ballot. We must have your Absentee Ballot Request form in our hands by 5 PM. In-person early voting will still be available after this date.
November 6: Last day of in-person early voting.
November 7: Election Day. Polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Voters must vote at their assigned polling place.

In person voting at the Auditor's Office was available weekdays 8 AM - 5 PM October 18 through November 6. Due to construction there was no drive-through voting this election.

August 28 - September 21, 5 PM: Filing period for all other cities, school boards, and community college boards.

Nomination Petitions
No changes may be made to petition pages after signatures have been collected. We recommend completing the header section on the petition, then making copies of that page so that the header information is consistent. The requirement that each petition page include the name and contact information of the person collecting signatures has been repealed.
Affidavit of Candidacy (same for all candidates): This document must be notarized and no changes may be made to it after notarization. Our office provides notary services free of charge.
Candidates for city offices will file with the Auditor at 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City. (West Branch candidates will file at West Branch City Hall.) Candidates for school district and community college boards will file with their respective secretaries.
