Each year, as part of the annual budget process, Johnson County designates a portion of General Basic funds for allocation in grant funding that addresses basic human needs, health, and child and family well-being. The monies are distributed through the Social Services Block Grants and are generally awarded as discretionary funds.

The Hunger Relief Grant funds are awarded to local agencies to assist with services that help reduce food insecurity and improve access to healthy food for residents residing in or near food deserts. These funds are awarded as non-discretionary funds.

The Sustainability/Green Initiatives funds are awarded to assist nonprofits with sustainability solutions and are awarded as non-discretionary funds.

The Emergency/Innovative Flexible funds & Poverty Reduction Initiatives funds are awarded to assist with short- term or one-time needs and support capacity building, sustaining services, innovative new programming or the purchase of equipment/supplies.  These funds are also awarded as non-discretionary funds.
