Reminder: Johnson County recommended minimum wage to increase to $12.25 per hour July 1, 2023

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors reminds business owners and the public that the County’s recommended minimum wage has increased to $12.25 per hour, effective Saturday, July 1, 2023. The Supervisors voted to increase the County’s recommended minimum wage by 69 cents at the May 11, 2023, formal meeting. The Supervisors used Consumer Price Index data to set the increase, which is based on inflation.

Thomas Jesse sentenced to 80 years in prison for multiple counts of sexual abuse

Thomas Jesse, 43, was sentenced to 80 years in prison after being found guilty of 40 counts of sexual abuse in the second degree. The sentencing took place on Friday, June 23, 2023, in Johnson County District Court. The verdict, issued on May 5, 2023, by Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Andrew Chappell, detailed each of the 40 sex acts committed by Jesse against a child under the age of 12, all of which were recorded by the defendant on video.

Independence Day 2023 hours for Johnson County departments and office

Most Johnson County governmental departments and offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Detailed schedule changes include:

Ambulance: Johnson County Ambulance Service (JCAS) will be available for routine and emergency response. The JCAS billing and administrative offices will be closed. Emergency services remain available 365 days a year. In an emergency, residents should always dial 911.

Sheriff’s Office seeks space needs assessment RFQ - Reissued

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking requests for quotes from professional consulting firms to conduct a space needs assessment that will evaluate the existing facility, analyze space optimization and develop projections and conceptual plans for future needs.

Johnson County announces Child Care Assistance Incentive Program to increase access to quality child care for low-income families

Johnson County Social Services’ is now accepting applications for its new Child Care Assistance Incentive Program. Applications will be accepted through August 1, 2023, for the first round of approvals. After that date, applications will be accepted and approved on a first-received, first-funded basis. Applications are available on the Johnson County website at www.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/ss. This program is a result of Johnson County’s investment of funds received from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
