Dates and deadlines

  • July 9: First day to request a mailed absentee ballot, 120 days before the election. Absentee Ballot Request Form
  • July 30 - August 25: Federal and state candidate filing period. File with Secretary of State
  • August 6 - 29: County and township candidate filing period. File with auditor's office.
  • Monday, September 3: Labor Day, office closed.
  • Saturday, September 22: Auditor's office must mail military and overseas ballots by this date, 45 days before election.
  • Monday, October 8: First day for in person early voting at auditor's office and satellite voting. First day to send out mailed absentee ballots. As ordered by Iowa Supreme Court August 10. Johnson County does not observe the federal Columbus Day holiday and our office was open.
  • Saturday, October 27:
    • Voter pre-registration deadline, 5 PM. Registration still possible after this date with election day registration procedure.
    • Last person to request mailed absentee ballot. Request must be in our office by 5 PM. In person early voting was still available after this date.
    • Auditor's office open 8 AM to 5 pm as required by law.
  • Saturday, November 3: Auditor's office open 8 hours as required by law.
  • Monday, November 5: Postmark deadline for mailed absentee ballots. Ballots may be returned in person to our office until the polls close November 6.
  • Tuesday, November 6: Election Day. Polls open 7 AM to 9 PM. Vote at regular polling places.
